Imposter syndrome is defined as:
"the persistent inability to believe that one's success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one's own efforts or skills".
Do you ever feel like a fraud? Do you doubt your abilities? Put your achievements down to sheer luck?
Imposter Syndrome can be debilitating and prevent you from progressing in all areas of life. You do not feel worthy of your achievements and feel that you may get "found out" for deceiving others. You feel as though you are not as intelligent as you portray yourself to be or feel you do not have the skills to carry out the task at hand.
You're certainly not alone, however, more often than not, this is simply not the case. This is you feeling as though you are nothing special and that anyone else could do the same in your situation. Maybe they can, but if they can, you certainly can too.
You need to let go of your inner perfectionist and stop setting super high standards for yourself. You need to believe in yourself. Be kind to yourself. Believe in your skills. Believe in your ability.
I know that you can do anything you put your mind to and everything you need to succeed is already with in you.
If Imposter Syndrome is an issue for you, a great way to overcome it is to change your mindset and way of thinking. Change your perspective of your thoughts; acknowledge them and rationalise them. A good starting point is to use daily affirmations, such as:
- I am worthy of my achievements
- I am confident in my abilities
- I am intelligent
- I am skilled
- I am wise and knowledgeable
- I am worthy of my success
- I can do anything I put my mind to
Affirmations can be very powerful and are an excellent tool to overcome negative thoughts and self-doubt. By repeating affirmations daily, you eventually start to believe them and start to build your self-confidence.
More about affirmations in my next blog. Stay tuned. With Love, Sam xo
